Abstract

Empathy is essential to understand and share other¡¯s emotions and mental state, which has been reported to be closely related, but challenged, for individuals with autistic developmental disorder (ASD) in developing prosocial behaviors. This study reviewed a body of research on empathy in ASD, focusing on 18 experimental studies which had been published either in American or British journals since 2000. As a result, distinctive features from each research component were as follows: cognitive psychological analysis on empathic characteristics(research type); high-functioning autism/Asperger¡®s syndrome(participant); cognitive and affective empathy; multimodal information processing/experimental instruments with ecologically valid and natural context(method); mostly significant differences in various empathy tasks compared with matched controls and untypical(result). Further discussion on the results and implications for future research and practices were entailed.
